Why Provence
and French Riviera ?
Provence is a historic
province in southeastern France along the Mediterranean Sea. AIX-EN-PROVENCE
was its capital. The area is now divided into the départements of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence,
Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, Hautes-Alpes, Var, and Vaucluse.
Wheat, wine grapes, olives, and rice are grown there, and sheep are raised.
The French Riviera benefits from a Mediterranean-type climate, characterised by exceptional sunshine almost 300 days a year and mild temperatures for most of the year.
Provence offers a landscape of many distinct characters and contrasts.
There are lush river valleys, though Provence is usually associated with
less fertile vegetation. Alluvial plains follow along the sides of major
rivers, especially the Rhône. The Camargue offers a dramatic landscape
where the distinction between land and sea is often blurred, and some
of its wildlife resembles that of an African environment. The meeting
of water and land in parts of Provence has carved caves beneath the surface
of the limestone rock, the larger and more accessible of these being among
the best show caves in Europe. The rivers have also cut deeply into the
limestone to form gorges, none more famous than the breathtaking Verdon
Gorge in Haute Provence. West of the Gorge are a complicated range of
mountains, where the Pyrennean and Alpine folds meet. Here is Mont Ventoux,
the highest peak in Provence (6,260ft, 1,909m). Further to the south appear
the buckled ridges of Montagne Ste Victoire, one of painter Paul Cézanne's
favorite perspectives. To the east and north of the Verdon are other mountain
ranges, such as the beautiful Maures and Estel, as well as the mountain
wall of the pre-Alps that separate this area from true Alpine France.
One of the most famous resort areas in the world, the French Riviera continues west from the Italian Riviera and Menton through Monaco, Nice, Antibes and Cannes, along the Mediterranean coast of the Alpes-Maritimes département. After Cannes, there is some dispute regarding its extent, with some authorities (including the official tourist bodies for the Alpes-Maritimes) arguing that it stops at the border with the département of the Var, after Théoule-sur-Mer. Others suggest it extends further along the Var coastline, at least as far as Saint-Tropez but possibly to Hyères or even the border with the Bouches-du-Rhône département.
The French Riviera has a Mediterranean climate, with sunny, hot, dry summers and mild winters. Winter temperatures are moderated by the proximity to the Mediterranean - days of frost are extremely rare, and in summer the maximum temperature rarely exceeds 30 degrees celsius.
Along the French Riviera there a number of micro-climates, and there can be great differences in the weather between Nice on the east and Toulon on the west. Strong winds, such as the mistral, a cold dry wind from the northwest or from the east, are another characteristic feature of the Riviera, particularly in the winter and between Toulon and Marseille.
Nice and the Alpes-Maritime
Nice and the Alpes-Maritime Department are sheltered by the Alps, and are the most protected part of the Mediterranean coast. The winds in this department are usually gentle, blowing from the sea to the land, though sometimes the Mistral blows strongly from the northwest, or, turned by the mountains, from the east. In 1956 a mistral wind from the northwest reached the speed of 180 kilometers an hour at Nice airport.[2] Sometimes in summer the scirocco brings high temperatures and reddish desert sand from Africa. (See Winds of Provence.)
Rainfall is rare, but can be torrential, particularly in September, when storms and rain are caused by the difference between the colder air inland and the warm Mediterranean water temperature (20-24 degrees C.). The average annual rainfall in Nice is 767 millimeters, more than in Paris, though it rains an average of just 63 days a year.
Cannes is a city and commune in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Located in Southern Europe at the south eastern extremity of France, Cannes is a privileged crossroads between the Alps, Provence, Monaco and Italy.
Cannes is one of the best-known cities of the French Riviera, famous for the glitzy hotels, cars, beaches, and visitors. Cannes has become one of the busiest tourist destinations among jet-setters and famous celebrities as the city hosts many significant events including the annual Cannes Film Festival. Its old town, Le Suquet, is also a great spot for remarkable panoramic scenery.
The city of Cannes if perhaps most famous for its annual film festival; however, it was the scene of significant activity long before the arrival of celluloid and has a long and interesting history dating back thousands of years. Today, its atmosphere of vibrancy and cultural richness is fortified by it proud heritage.
Evidence exists to suggest that civilisations inhabited the area we now know as Cannes as early as the 2nd century BC. It’s believed that the Oxybian tribe from Liguria formed various settlements here, which came under the name Aegitna. Historians are unsure of the meaning of this name, but what is known is that initially the area was little more than a simple fishing village used as a port of call between the Lérins Islands. Life in Aegitna was fairly uneventful until the year 69 AD, when it became the scene of a violent conflict between the troops of Othos and Vitellius, and this marked a significant period of unsettlement in the area.
With the beginning of the 20th century come new luxury dream hotels such as the Miramar, the Martinez... The city modernises with the construction of the sports centre, the installation of the street car, the opening of the post office, the appearance of educational establishments (le lycée Carnot, l'Institut Stanislas), … All these nice projects are possible only after the terrible First World War (14-18) which changes Cannes into a gigantic hospital. All the big establishments are then requisitioned.
After the war, the German and English clientele of Cannes diminishes, wheras the Americans are attracted by the Côte d'Azur. In Cannes, the luxury, the elegance and the exquisiteness are very appreciated. The number of luxury boutiques multiplies. Sportswise, the choice is equally raising : Yachting, tennis, petanque, polo, golf, ..., fishing is somehow forgotten a bit. Little by little, the winter tourisme is letting its place to the summer tourisme, therefore, the summer casino at the Palm Beach is constructed. One can profit from a large choice of festivities : galas, fireworks, concerts, comedies,... ; so many unavoidable activities leading Cannes to success.
The first place to visit is La Croisette, the beautiful waterfront avenue with gorgeous palm trees offering a relaxing promenade. La Croisette is very famous for its picturesque beaches where you can find many first-class resorts, restaurants, hip cafés and an array of brand name boutiques. La Suquet, the old town of Cannes, provides the breathtaking view of La Croisette. Visitors can see the remains of the fortified tower and the fascinating Chapel of St Anne housing the Musée de la Castre. In which are displayed many items from artworks, musical instruments, sculptures, decorative arts to a section on ethnography. Some nice public beaches can also be found in this area. For chilling atmosphere stroll to Îles de Lérins where the unlucky man immortalised in The Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned. This is only a short boat ride offshore.

The French Riviera
France's
top tourist destination after Paris - is known world-wide thanks to
its outstanding natural environment and the quality of its tourism infrastructure.
Tourism on the Côte d'Azur now accounts for 1% of the world market for
overnight stays. Tourist expenditures (excluding transport and investments)
amount to 5 billion euros. The
French Riviera is known for its large international events and its
outstanding setting. In 2003, the area hosted 8.6 million visitors.
The stays, averaging 7.3 days, represented 62 million guest nights per
year, in total. Foreign visitors, which make up over 57% of the tourists
coming to the French Riviera, travel mainly from Europe (Great Britain,
Italy, Germany and Scandinavia) and the United States.
The
French Riviera is an attractive area to visit in any season. Tourists
have become aware of this, and many visit outside the summer months.
Figures speak for themselves : 50% of the overnight stays are registered
outside the summer months, and August represents only 15% of the year's
total overnight stays.

To
meet the ever growing demand of tourists, the French Riviera continues
to improve the conditions for hosting its visitors, with an ever expanding
concentration of hotels totalling 155,000 beds. Over the last five years,
hotels have added 27,000 more beds. There are more than 732 star-classified
hotels, with an average annual occupation rate of 57%. More than 30%
of the hotel capacity on the Côte d'Azur is classified as 4-star (22%
of French 4-star hotels are to be found on the French Riviera). Among
places to stay, there are also 115 short-term apartment complexes with
an average annual occupation rate of 69%.

Business
tourism, another important aspect of this strategic sector, generates
alone more than 1.9 million visitors per year. Throughout the year,
more than 200 domestic and international business events take place
on the French Riviera: conventions, exhibitions, and trade shows. Each
year, more than 500,000 congress-goers visit the French Riviera, 73%
of them coming from overseas. The French Riviera is equipped with 8
congress and exhibition halls and around 30 sites for events, meetings
and exhibitions for 70 to 6,600 persons. Located throughout the major
Côte d'Azur centres, they are within easy reach from Nice Côte d'Azur
Airport and are supported by a dense, high-quality array of hotels.
Sea
cruises represent one of the fastest growing tourism sectors, accounting
460,356 passengers in 2003. Nice-Villefranche has become France's premier
cruise stop, with 346,581 passengers in 2003. The ports of Nice, Cannes
and Villefranche-sur-Mer hosted 586 cruises ship calls. 15.65% of the
total traffic use one of these points as their port of call. Source:

The
enduring charm of the
French Riviera comes from the mildness of its climate, its wonderful
environment and the historical, architectural, artistic and cultural
sites found within it. What intensifies the area's attractiveness is
that there is such a diversity of sites, from the shores of the Mediterranean
to the Alps. Many recreational complexes are scattered throughout the
Riviera region, offering an extraordinary range of activities: water sports, tennis, golf, horse-riding, canyoning, hiking, skiing
and climbing... not to forget the beaches and seaside casinos.
